MORE ABOUT AN ALL DAY EVENT. THE END.:
On the concluding day of PLATFORM 2012: Parallels, original Parallels artist Ralph Lemon creates the framework for a conceptual performance installation taking place over nearly ten hours in the sanctuary at Danspace Project in St. Mark’s Church with alternating movement bodies – a group comprised of eleven extraordinary artists (plus a surprise guest or two!!) ranging from visual artists to actors to musicians to choreographers – whose identities are self-obscured.
The event runs continually from 11:30am through 9:10pm with each artist creating their own improvisatory score, aestheticized disguise, and sound. For one hour each, they negotiate their bodies’ space and time within the sanctuary and within a sculptural landscape, “a congregation of objects” created for the event by visual artist Nari Ward. There will be fluid overlap between each artist’s performance so that at certain times there will be more than one artist inhabiting the space. Text from Paul Virilio’s seminal 1980 book “The Aesthetics of Disappearance” is projected across the sanctuary’s ceiling in durational video designed by Jim Findlay, andRoderick Murray provides a lighting environment that also changes throughout the day.
Performers include niv Acosta, Souleymane Badolo, Kevin Beasley, James Hannaham, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Malcolm Low, April Matthis, Okwui Okpokwasili, Omagbitse Omagbemi, Willow Parchment andDavid Thomson.
