mayfield brooks improvises while black and is based in Lenapehoking, the homeland of the Lenape people also known as Brooklyn, New York. brooks is a movement-based performance artist, vocalist, urban farmer, writer, and wanderer. They are on the faculty at Movement Research NYC and the 2021 recipient of the biennial Merce Cunningham Award from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. brooks’ dance film, Whale Fall was nominated for a 2021 Bessie Award and they will be a 2022-23 Hodder Fellow at Princeton University this year. brooks is an international teacher and performer whose entire body of work arises from their life/art/movement practice, Improvising While Black or IWB.
Silas Riener is a graduate of Princeton University and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, and was a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 2007-2012. He has performed with Chantal Yzermans, Takehiro Ueyama, Christopher Williams, Joanna Kotze, Jonah Bokaer, Rebecca Lazier, Tere O’Connor, Wally Cardona, and Kota Yamazaki. His own work has been curated at EMPAC, The Chocolate Factory, LMCC’s River to River Festival, The Serpentine Pavillion, and Danspace Project. His ongoing collaboration with artist Martha Friedman has resulted in works at Andrea Rosen Gallery 2, The Henry Museum, Locust Projects Miami, and Jessica Silverman Gallery.
Angie Pittman is a New York-based dancer-choreographer whose choreographic work uses dance, text, and sound inside of a Black Radical Tradition. Their work has been performed at The Kitchen, Gibney Dance, BAAD!, Movement Research at Judson Church, Triskelion Arts, STooPS, The Domestic Performance Agency, The KnockDown Center, The Invisible Dog(Catch 73), The Chocolate Factory Theater, Danspace Project, and Roulette. As a dancer, they have danced in work by Larissa Valez-Jackson, MBDance, Tere O’Connor, Anna Sperber, Donna Uchizono Company, and many others and is currently dancing in the work of Cynthia Oliver and Ralph Lemon. They are currently a 2024-2025 Center for Humanities Faculty Fellow and an Assistant Arts Professor of Dance at New York University.
Ali Rosa-Salas is a curator whose approach is rooted in the belief that curatorial practice must serve the public good. She finds inspiration from the cultural ecosystems of Lenapehoking (currently called New York City), where she was proudly born, raised and currently resides. Ali has served New York City arts and culture through her work at Abrons Arts Center/Henry Street Settlement. She began her tenure at the organization in 2017 as Director of Performance Programs and in 2022 was appointed Vice President of Visual and Performing Arts. In her current role, Ali guides the curatorial vision of the Center’s presenting, education, and residency programs. In addition to her role at Abrons, Ali is an Associate Curator of the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. Ali received a BA from Barnard College in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and an MA from the Institute for Curatorial Practice in Performance at Wesleyan University.

For 50 years, Danspace Project has supported a vital community of contemporary dance artists in an environment unlike any other in the United States. Located in the historic St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery, Danspace shares its facility with the Church, The Poetry Project, and New York Theatre Ballet. Danspace Project’s Commissioning Initiative has commissioned nearly 600 new works since its inception in 1994.
