Danspace’s signature long-form conversation series presents a virtual conversation between 2021-22 Renewal Residency Artists Jordan Demetrius Lloyd and Gillian Walsh with facilitator and 2021-22 Research Fellow, David Thomson. Danspace’s Renewal Residencies are an open and flexible program created as an urgent and necessary response to the needs of these artists this year. The Research Fellows are dance artists who have long term relationships with Danspace. In dialogue with each other and Danspace’s curatorial team, the Fellows are providing feedback informing organizational change and curatorial development. Winter 2022 Conversations Without Walls will explore and unpack field-wide structures that dance makers are currently facing, resisting, and navigating creatively.
“As a maker, my choreographic impulses lean toward producing material that viewers can both see and feel, activating a sort of tension between the performers, the movement, and everyone witnessing,” explains Lloyd. “I feel myself attuned to the shifts in my personal, and our collective realities. I find myself interrogating the structures in our field that are no longer serving artists today.” Working with dance as a site of psychospiritual friction, Gillian Walsh produces long, meditative, highly formal choreographies, “I find myself deeper in [a] turn toward mysticism, thinking about God and the materiality of the body, as global crisis worsens.” During her residency, Walsh is developing a new ballet considering grief and new modes of transcendence.
