Dean Moss is an interdisciplinary choreographer and video artist. He directs a project based company called Gametophyte Inc. Dean is the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in Choreography; the Doris Duke Impact Award in Theatre; a Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Artists Grant; plus fellowships in both Choreography and Multidisciplinary Works from the New York Foundation for the Arts. He was awarded a “Bessie” for his work ‘Spooky action at a distance”. Curator of Dance and Performance at The Kitchen from 1999-2004 and a Curatorial Advisor until 2009, Dean currently guest lectures on video and performance composition in the department of Kinetic Imaging at Virginia Commonwealth University. He serves as a director for the Foundation for Contemporary Arts.

Born in Osaka Japan, Sawami Fukuoka graduated Saga Art College in Kyoto 1999. She was selected for the scholarship program at ImPluzTanz Danse Festival in Vienna Austria in 2001. In 2002, joined Amsterdam based dance company Emio Greco | PC touring worldwide until 2013. Since working as a freelance dance artist Sawami was featured in Yasuko Yokoshi’s “Zero-One” in 2014 and “Shuffleyomamba” in 2019. She has recently appeared in two video works by Moss, “demand me for the reckoning” (2021) and “untitled:embrace” (2022).

Emma Engel is a multidisciplinary performance artist based in New York. She has worked professionally as an artist specializing in dance and original choreography since attending The Martha Graham Dance School in her teens. Emma has a BA in Contemporary Dance from The New School where she had the honor of working with Moss, Rebecca Stenn, Reggie Wilson, Neil Greenberg, Keely Garfield among others. Most recently she founded the independent company Bristol Mary Dance which has toured nationally. Emma is honored to be working with Dean Moss on the production of this project.

KUBO is a third generation Japanese American artist born in Oshawa, Ontario (Haudenosaunee Land). KUBO has exhibited work at The Anderson Gallery and CandelaGallery in Richmond, Detroit Artists Market, Sechrest Gallery of Art, Ann Arbor Film Festival, Wing Luke Museum, and on Governors Island in New York City. KUBO received a Bachelors in Studio Art from Oakland University in 2018 and a Masters of Fine Arts in Kinetic Imaging from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2022. KUBO currently lives and works in New York City.

Carol Mullins first designed lighting for Danspace in 1978 for Andy de Groat. She’s been a resident Lighting Designer here for 40 years. She’s received 3 Bessies (New York Dance and Performance Awards) and one OBIE for her lighting.

Your marks and surface was supported by resident faculty studio space at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2017; developmental performances at Hercules Gallery 2018 (with Grey Macmurray, Samita Sinha, Shane Solow), and Columbia University 2019 curated by Alessandra Gomez; a 2019-2022 Rosin Resident Artist Project/Movement Research residency; a 2020 Technical Residency at the Center for Performance Research; a 2021 Artist in Residence at Petronio Residency Center. Additionally, Gametophyte Inc. received grants during COVID-19 from NYS Dance Force 2020 and Dance/NYC 2020, 2022. Danspace Project commissioned and supported Your marks and surface, as well as Moss’ 2020 film Untitled (perfect human). ABOUT DANSPACE PROJECT
Danspace Project presents new work in dance, supports a diverse range of choreographers in developing their work, encourages experimentation, and connects artists to audiences.

For almost 50  years, Danspace Project has supported a vital community of contemporary dance artists in an environment unlike any other in the United States. Located in the historic St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery, Danspace shares its facility with the Church, The Poetry Project, and New York Theatre Ballet. Danspace Project’s Commissioning Initiative has commissioned over 570 new works since its inception in 1994.

Since 2010, we have produced fourteen Platforms, published fourteen print catalogues and five e-books, launched the Conversations Without Walls discussion series, and explored models for public discourse and residencies.
