Dance artists Bria Bacon and Annie MingHao Wang will each premiere a new work as a part of a shared evening.

“Briefly speaking, I am working within studies around reparation, grief, and rest.” performing artist Bacon writes, “In-lab crafting practices and procedures to submerge into and emerge out of autonomous effort, change, transformation, and rebirth in a chronically-ill body. My prayer: I am soil. I am seed. I am roots. I am trunk and branches. Light and shadow awaiting blossom. And, blossoming isn’t all romance and poetics. It takes incubation, destruction, and courage. It takes dimensionality, deep listening, and support. It takes confrontation, the imperceptible, and collage of all likenesses. I am past, present, future, and outside of time altogether. I can heal and shred and mend; pause, begin again, continue. I will and wield real magic.”

In Wang’s piece fabrication, original textiles and textile movements are intertwined into choreography that evokes the charged space of embodied knowledge and East Asian histories of labor and migration. fabrication will be performed by Wang, Noa Rui-Piin Weiss, and Grace Yi-Li Tong. Wang has previously shown work-in-development in Danspace’s DraftWork series.

Annie MingHao Wang (she/they) is a choreographer and dancer in New York. They are a 2025 Fellow of the Bogliasco Center as an awardee of the Van Cleef & Arpels Fellowship in Dance and have been Artist-in-Residence at Movement Research, Topaz Arts, Marble House Project, Leimay Foundation, BRIC, and the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Their work has been awarded grants by LMCC (Manhattan Arts Grant) and Brooklyn Arts Council. They have been presented by Danspace Project’s DraftWorks series, Pioneers Go East at the 2024 Out-FRONT! festival, Movement Research @Judson, Leimay’s OUTSIGHT series, Five Myles, and the Exponential Festival. Annie is a longtime company member of Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group and has also danced for Same As Sister and Sugar Vendil’s Isogram Project.

Bria Bacon (she/her) is an artist, born and raised on Lenapehoking lands, or New Jersey. She graduated from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. To name a few, Bacon has worked with Stefanie Batten Bland, ChameckiLerner, Wendell Gray II, Hadar Ahuvia, Bebe Miller Company, Stephen Petronio Company, Kyle Marshall Choreography, and Company Christoph Winkler in Berlin. Currently, she is collaborating with Sweat Variant (Okwui Okpokwasili and Peter Born), Saidiya Hartman and Sarah Benson, and Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group, among others. Bacon’s work has been supported, as a 2026 BAX Space grantee.

Juliette Mapp + Vicky Shick

Juliette Mapp and Vicky Shick, friends for over 30 years, will each perform a piece reflecting their current interests in movement, structure, and meaning-making, while celebrating their connection and shared sensibility. Their first shared performance was An Evening of Days as part of Arts on Site’s The Bang Group Festival in 2024.

Returning to Danspace after more than a decade, Juliette Mapp‘s Another Free Day is a solo meditation on dancing, artistic influences, and sustaining a creative physical practice and identity. Another Free Day is a continuation of Juliette’s 30-year-long solo studio practice where she explores how dance, through its ephemeral nature, can help us be truly alive and potentially free from the fear and burden of mortality.

Vicky Shick’s Including You is a stitched-together collage of slightly askew, detailed vignettes. Physically robust and quietly pedestrian, this “remake version” lives amidst performer/artist Jon Kinzel’s singular object constructions enhancing the already glorious architectural landscape of Danspace Project’s sanctuary space. Non sequiturs gently bump up against each other, and along with sound and Kinzel’s pieces, our intimacies and vulnerabilities unfold. There’s big dancing too, all offering warmth, the familiar, and oddball camaraderie. In addition to Kinzel and Shick, Jennifer Lafferty, Marilyn Maywald Yahel, Mor Mendel, Jimena Paz, and Cherrie Yu—a cast from four continents and four decades join and inhabit this tiny respite from our world.

Juliette Mapp is a dancer, teacher and choreographer based in New York City. She has presented her work throughout New York City since 2001. She has performed in the work of many other choreographers, most notably John Jasperse, Vicky Shick and Deborah Hay. Juliette has taught throughout the world and is currently on the faculty of The New School in New York City. Juliette was a guest curator at Danspace Project where she programmed the “Back to New York City” platform. Juliette received two Bessie’s, one for dancing (2002) and one for choreography (2008).

Vicky Shick has been involved in the NYC dance community for five decades, making dances since the late eighties and collaborating with various performers, choreographers, artists, lighting and sound designers. Locally, her work has been presented at Arts on Site, Danspace Project, DTW, Judson Church, The Kitchen, P.S 122, Roulette, and Sundays on Broadway. For six years she was a member of the Trisha Brown Company and has staged several of Brown’s dances including in her hometown, Budapest. In addition to teaching internationally, in the NYC area, she teaches mostly at Movement Research, for the Trisha Brown Company, and for 15 years at Hunter College.  She was a two-time Movement Research Artist-in-Residence, a two-time Bessie recipient, a DiP grantee at Gibney Dance Center, a grant recipient from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, and a Guggenheim Fellow.

Facilitated by Ishmael Houston-Jones since the ’90s and currently co-curated by Houston-Jones with Danspace curators, DraftWork presents work-in-development showings by artists at all stages of their career. This afternoon features performances by Iliana Penichet-Ramírez and Joel Watson.

DraftWork is free, open to all, and followed by questions and conversation between the artists, curator, and audience.

Iliana Penichet-Ramírez is a multidisciplinary dancer and choreographer whose work examines the relationship between movement and various audiovisual mediums. She creates and directs live performance, print, and video work.
